As a new teacher, most of the books in my library were handed down to me and most are out dated. My students are not able to relate to many of the characters in these books. However, the requested print-rich novels contain diverse characters with similar circumstances to my students. They emphasize cultural tolerance and physical acceptance. They also highlight the importance and power of friendship, family, and kindness. These books will inspire my students to read more and to be accepting of others. Most importantly, these books will teach my students that although we may face hardships, violence, and exclusion, perseverance and a positive attitude can help us thrive. My students will be able to connect to the diverse characters in these novels. The novels chosen include characters that overcame the loss and sickness of a parent or sibling, gang violence, and exclusion due to their physical appearance. These books send beautiful messages that inspire determination and benevolence.
