I want students to make connections between culture, heritage, literacy, and the arts, through self-exploration! In February, at a time when students became restless awaiting the end of the school year and completing state testing, hostility arose between peers and diverse groups. Recognizing that my students needed more support in learning about compassion, self-respect, and collaboration, I developed and a project to promote achievement and to decrease negative behaviors. I presented a challenge to them, asking that they participate in a school-wide project that reflects African American History. I invited them to make connections and apply what they learned through books, focusing on leaders, both past and present. The results were amazing! I was astounded with the art and how they applied their talents! The students were so proud of their accomplishments and would like to continue the project. They attended a gallery walk in the halls which displayed the twelve large scale 3D portraits they made by selecting many historically important figures as well as present famous figures. The details and beautiful connections made through art and literacy are poetic! They communicated several centuries of creative expression, exploring the theme that reflects African American experience, using all the art elements. Also, they reflect their personal experiences, humanity, and collaboration of youth. Other heritages and cultures are represented in my building, but ALL students carried a significant role in the project. I would like to have them contribute also, adding to the collection. A biography accompanies each portrait, aligned with state ELA standards. A gallery walk with accompanying questions encourages them to decide which famous person they relate to and why using the starter sentences. For example, “I INSPIRE like Oprah because…..”. This project is important for the growth of students and the unity of the school!
