As I see our class as a student-centered team, I try to include my students in the decision making that goes on in our classroom community whenever possible. They get choice in how they learn, who they learn with, and how they demonstrate what they’ve learned. Giving them choices helps them feel empowered by having some control over their day. Flexible seating is another way I will be able to offer my students choice. The more choices students have, the more they will feel excited, invested, and responsible for their learning. Research shows that students with flexible seating options in their classroom behave better, spend more time learning, are able to do their best work, and are more engaged. It allows the movement students need to stay alert and focused. They are able to make an appropriate seating choice from options where they feel they can best learn. Flexible seating has also been shown to be better for health and improved behavior in students. It is also a benefit for those students with sensory needs. Some of the options I have selected to make our classroom as flexible as possible include ball chairs, crate seats, standing tables, kneeling tables, yoga mats to lay on their bellies, camping chairs, and floor cushions with lap tables. I am excited to see them thrive with this innovative system in place! Given the ongoing education budget crisis in Colorado, we must rely on outside resources to supplement our District’s resources to customize learning for our students. A donation to support flexible seating for my students will help make the classroom even more student-oriented by providing them with options in where they will sit.
