Summer is nearly over, and I will meet my "new batch" of kids in a few weeks. I have yet to make their acquaintance, but know there will be 27 great kids total. Judging from past years, I will have a broad range of abilities, behaviors, experiences, and personalities! I do know that I will have 2 full inclusion students, both with Down Syndrome. I am a former special education teacher and now teach in the general education classroom. I look forward to meeting the unique needs of all 27 kids, but especially cherish the opportunity to serve the kids designated as having special needs. In years past, these kids were sequestered from their typically developing peers and were not afforded the opportunities they now enjoy. In addition, the non-disabled peers will benefit from learning early in their school career that there is room for all sorts of people; a true life lesson! I want every child to leave kindergarten knowing that they are the most special kid I ever met!
