Please help to fund our classroom library! I am hoping to fill our classroom with more texts about people of color and diverse backgrounds. Children need to see themselves represented in the books they read. I strive to be a culturally responsive teacher and adjust my teaching to best meet my students' individual academic and emotional needs. I work to relate my teaching and the texts we read to students' personal interests and cultural backgrounds. Many of my students of color enter third grade below proficiency in reading. Often, the books at their level are "baby-ish" and difficult to relate to. The books included in this project are at varied levels to reach students at all different reading levels. Characters in the books are relatable and reflect the diverse cultures of my classroom. It is my hope that students will make personal connections to the characters in these books and develop a love of reading. I am requesting several copies of different titles so that they can be used in guided reading groups. Students engage in guided reading by reading books at their instructional level and discussing them with peers through teacher-directed prompts. By having several copies of titles like "One Crazy Summer" and "The Story of Ruby Bridges", students will have the opportunity to engage in rich and meaningful discussions about race, equity, and adversity in their reading groups.
