I bet it's difficult to picture children in first grade without knowing many books by the great authors we read to our own children. My students predominately come from homes with low socio economic status. These children have little to no phonemic awareness upon entering school, and experience a difficult time getting the extra support from home that many of us take for granted. Currently, over 50% of our students are already reading below grade level before entering our classrooms. Our elementary school is Title 1 in Georgia. Many of the kids live in over-crowded homes that are located in dangerous areas. Often these children are struggling with language acquisition, making reading a greater challenge. These children do not have good books available at home to read or parents that are able to read to them in English. They are all wonderful kids that deserve better! Please help these kids!
