A strong base supports the biggest and tallest ideas. Grants and donations are always accessible for technology, books, and supplies, but where are middle school students to put all these wonderful learning components? Our current desktops do not allow space for more than one notebook or book at a time. In order to increase learning knowledge and workplace readiness skills, students need to able to access textbooks and laptops along with a space for writing. If you look or think about your "work" desk and the amount of space required for you to be productive, it would be impossible to fit it all on a 12" x 12" tabletop. Comfort in the workspace allows for better work produced. When a person is not distracted by discomfort, they are able to work better. Many students seem to have attention deficits when they are really just trying to get comfortable. Our current chairs are made of hard plastic and students have difficulty sitting comfortably for more than fifteen minutes. Imagine how little work you would be able to complete well within that time. My hope is that with this new comfortable seating and extended workspace, my students will be able to give their full focus to the task of learning and demonstrating their knowledge. Their future should not be impaired by inadequate seating.
