My project puts ukuleles in the hands of upper elementary students in an effort to continue engaging them in music making. A classroom set of ukuleles affords all students the opportunity to participate at once rather than waiting for their turn. Instant engagement and empowerment. The ukuleles are also covid-cool as they can also be properly cleaned after use! Learning to play the ukulele will not only reinforce and teach curriculum elements; it will also be fun! Students will learn to play chords which will allow them to accompany songs following YouTube videos and will eventually lead to them being able to accompany themselves and others while singing. I envision a ukulele club and small groups visiting a local Alzheimer's group residence! The ability to perform for themselves and others will create the sense of belonging that our students need more now that ever.
