At the beginning of the school year, my students begin a whole class literature study where we read a book altogether. They learn a variety of different skills through reading the book including identifying character traits and setting, developing vocabulary, summarizing the plot, and asking higher order thinking questions that elicit rich discussion. The book is something students have conversations about in and out of the classroom and helps to really forge our classroom community. Charlotte's Web is a classic and timeless novel that reaches all students in some way. Students learn the central themes of friendship, loyalty, and trust. They enjoy reading the book and are excited every day to learn what happens next. We were able to incorporate reading, writing, and grammar into our lessons. Students were also able to practice speaking, listening and vocabulary skills which were highly important for my English Language Learners. It is a book that we return to throughout the school year and truly helps students learn to love to read.
