Using mentor texts along with the required basal textbooks not only expose our scholars to various genres, but also allow them to read modern day texts that relate to each of their individual lives and cultures. Through the use of mentor texts, we can transform our ELA block to facilitate a love for reading. Along with the rooted in reading program, our mentor texts allow the scholars to be creative in crafts, lessons and activities each week focused around the mentor text and the specific reading skill. When these texts are not being used in our weekly lessons, they will be readily available for scholars to read at their own discretion for enjoyment.
