This project is about bringing our whole community together to create a garden and learn about healthy living. I wrote a grant to Lowe's and was awarded enough money to get our garden started. My students began learning about food labels and healthy choices through the UC DAVIS CalFresh Nutrition Program. In class we have been using nutrition to enhance mathematics, Science, and Reading. The students studied different countries and the crops grown. Each group planted seedlings and are now ready to transplant. We were able to purchase the wood needed to build our garden with the grant money and had high school students from the last chance adult school, find pride in building this for the young students in my class. As a community and hands-on learning element, this garden will impact not only my students, but all the children at our school. My goal is to have a garden bed built for each grade level; to be able to utilize as a learning component for their classrooms, to be able to take students outside to actually touch what they are learning about and see first hand how crops grow, and to learn about healthy living and the benefits and responsibility of having their own crops. Now, we need the 30 small shovels from DonorsChoose.org so the students can plant their crops. We need the hoses and nozzles to water our crops. We need the shade structure so the students can be safe in the sun, yet be taken down so crops get the sun they need. Last, we need the storage sheds to place all our tools in and locked for safety. This garden has built so much excitement already within our school and community. Please help us with the final touches to make it come to life!
