When you walk into my kindergarten classroom, at times it can seem like a mess. A good kind of mess! In the kitchen area you'll see a table set for two with a waiter writing an order on a notepad, a boy and girl will be taking care of the "babies" in a corner by getting them dressed and fed, Playdough will be used to create letters or animals all over a table, the puppet stage will be filled with creative reenactments of stories and fairy tales. Research clearly shows the importance of play in early childhood development because simply put young children learn the most when they are engaged in play. Through play, children learn to take turns, solve problems, listen, empathize, handle disappointment, etc. I would love to invite you into my classroom to watch a group of 5 and 6 year-olds open a new restaurant at the kitchen center. Those children will use creative ways to set up the restaurant, they'll use their writing and artistic skills to advertise, they will create some form of money if they can't find any, they will LEARN as they play. My classroom needs more tools for dramatic play and I am asking for multi-ethnic posable dolls, supplies for a veterinarian and food for our kitchen because play is the language of children.
