My project is designed to help our 9th graders feel welcomed to our high school as they transition from their smaller middle school settings to our much larger high school building. We have found that the success of students in 9th grade has a significant influence on whether our students achieve an on-time graduation four years later, so we are putting together new programming to make a concerted effort to make every one of our 450 freshman feel welcomed and that they have an important role to play at our school. One of our strategies is to provide each student with a Freshman Success Starter Kit. Included in these Kits will include 3 ring binders, folders, notebooks, pens, and pencils for each student. We are planning to work on strengthening our student’s organizational skills, class preparation, and overall good student habits and want to make sure that all of our students have the appropriate materials. While some of our students have access basic school supplies, some of our students do not and we would like to make sure the starting playing field is even for every student.
