Each year during the 3rd quarter, I design an intensive STEM unit for my older gifted students -- in part to prepare them for the upcoming standardized testing season, but also to allow them opportunities to understand how these skills are integrated in the real world. Each investigation covers a particular science strand, and students work through the stages of: Know, Learn, Understand, Apply and Synthesize. The Science Activity tubs from Lakeshore Learning are hands-on and highly collaborative. Upon completion of the unit, students work on multi-age teams in a friendly STEM Field Day competition, refining their newfound skills with Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.
