Many of my students are from failing schools and have moved to our district and have moved around a lot. Another part of our school population is from Jamaican and Puerto Rican schools where they are beaten or not forced to go to school and come to the United States significantly behind their peers. As fifth graders, there are not a lot of text books that are available to students who read below grade level. Studies show that students who read everyday at their reading level make the most progress. Our push in our school is to help students learn to read and love to read while reading at their level. With pressures to do well on our standardized tests, the teaching of science and social studies gets skipped in order to try to catch these kids up. If these books were available to them they would have the content accessible to them and they will grow as readers.
