Flexible seating has had a definite impact on my classroom. The old “traditional” plastic chairs were very uncomfortable and an uncomfortable student is a distracted and unproductive student. I also found that it empowers students by giving them some degree of choice and control over their environment. It gives them the opportunity to wobble, rock, bounce, lean or stand, which studies show increases oxygen flow to the brain, blood flow, and core strength. This type of seating also allows students to quickly and easily pair up, work in small groups, or discuss as a whole class. AND flexible seating just helps make learning fun!
