My students are not yet able to sustain casual conversations with their peers. I selected games that will promote their ability to take turns, empathize, speak and listen, and manage emotions. By supporting their social and emotional development, our students with autism will be able to participate more meaningfully in academic work as well as begin to build friendships. I selected games that will teach them the essential skills they need in order to forge authentic friendships. Some, like The Art of Children's Conversation, are focused specifically on practicing conversation skills, such as asking open ended questions and follow up questions. Others, such as the Social Skills board game, will help them to express and deal with their feelings appropriately.
