Working in a high-poverty school presents many challenges AND opportunities. Many of our students come to school completely unprepared for the academic demands of Kindergarten. Not only is there reading, writing, and math to conquer, but there is science, health, technology, and many other subjects we typically assume don't start until the upper grades. We are fortunate if they come to school well-fed and dressed appropriately. Since many families can't even provide the minimal classroom supplies we request, it is highly unlikely that they have these same resources in their homes either, much less access to resources like the Internet and digital technology. And yet, children ARE technologically savvy due to their exposure to video games and Smart phones, and we are constantly competing to keep their attention with new technologies and methods in the classroom. It presents a frustrating dilemma for teachers.
