Aside from teaching teens to write with proper grammar, research essays, and annotate texts, it is my job to help my students learn to love reading. Many of my students have gone through school reading books by authors who do not represent them, about topics that don't interest them, with characters that don't reflect them. It is my goal to make reading relevant and meaningful to my students by providing them with new books that mirror their own lives. I want my students to see themselves in my classroom library, and I will only be able to do this with books that represent all races, gender identities, and backgrounds. In making sure that this literature is available to all students, it will also be important to meet the needs of students who are differently abled. I am asking for ipad minis and headphones to ensure that students who need audiobooks have access to them at all times. I have also requested three adult chair balls to help kids who have the need for movement while reading. For students who have difficulty sitting still while they read, these chairs will help tremendously in allowing them to focus. These tools will be so meaningful to my students and will change their reading experience in my classroom. My hope is that, through these resources, they will become lifelong readers.
