Like all great projects, this one started with a child's question, "How does this little piece of corn turn into popcorn?" Because we live in Illinois, which is a major corn producing state for our country, we had a week of corn discovery. We're surrounded by corn fields, so the kids have a unique opportunity to see the process of corn growth. Once they had a chance to see and feel a stalk and an ear of corn, they were very determined to find out how to make it pop. We were surprised to find that most of children how no background information about how popcorn is made, except for "put it in the microwave." They had no idea that there were several different ways to cook it or that different types of popcorn exist. The more we discussed it, the more questions they had about different types, colors, and flavors of popcorn, as well as, what makes those magical little kernels pop! The children's questions and natural curiosity open the door for us to provide insightful learning activities and experiences that cover several different educational domains. We are lucky enough to have a caramel corn shop near us, so we can do a site visit. During this visit, we'll need cameras and sketch pads for the children to observe and document the equipment and the popping process in action. We are also requesting a variety of popping supplies and a large popper, so the kids can be active participants in making their own popcorn. Additionally, we are requesting a selection of scales, measuring tools, and resource books. These items will be essential to making our children critical thinkers with this project and many more in the future!
