Students in grades 3 and 4 spend 30 minutes a day reading self-selected texts independently. Numerous studies prove that wide reading improves children's comprehension, background knowledge, vocabulary, fluency, and writing (Krashen, 2004). I ask that you consider the impact of stories that children are being told, who is telling them, and who is being left out. Every child deserves to hold a book in their hand that validates and honors their unique identity, and helps them to value and appreciate the identities of others. I am asking for your support to broaden my students' world through story. I have selected numerous award-winning texts. In these narratives, children can connect with others who are similar and different from themselves. Through stories, our learners can discover how they too are resilient, compassionate, determined, and worthy of love, respect, and kindness. Together, we can make this possible for our students in Easthampton. Together, we are raising readers.
