I have decided that this year school year, my classroom will look and feel different. I want my students to feel a sense of relaxation that will allow them to be focused and productive. Flexible seating will permit my students to be self-aware about what type of seating helps them learn best. It is known that students that are not comfortable are usually distracted and unproductive and I can’t wait to see my students engaged in their work and relaxed. Every summer, we attend trainings and we read books that constantly recommend teachers to allow our students to move throughout the day. Movement gives them better oxygen flow to their brain, and what do we do? We expect for them to sit in a hard chair for more or less 5 hours with opportunities to stand and interact with their peers. My students work in groups throughout the day and their only choices are to sit on the carpet or their own desks. No more! I want to give my students floor seats and balance balls to have the choice to pick where to sit and work. Our world gives us so many choices out there and I want my students to have that choice in my classroom.
