My diverse kindergarten room is made up of twenty-one boys and girls. One is autistic, fifteen are migrant, and twenty are English learners. As much as they are different, they are still five and six year olds who see the world with such awe and wonder. It is a class full of curiosity, high energy, and excitement for learning. For some students this is the first encounter with any kind of formal education. They may not have went to a preschool, head start, or a transitional kindergarten program but they must all master the same standards and skills. Most of my parents do not speak English and know it will be an uphill climb for their child to learn not only a new language but also the concepts being taught. My class is one of three kindergarten classes in a K-8 school. The school really is the heart of this small community. A community with mostly hard working farm and field workers. Hard working people who value education.
