Science class becomes alive to students who are not good at other subjects because of the hands on learning that takes place. The drawback to that is the fact that it is often more expensive. With the current economic downturn in education those materials are harder to afford, especially for rural schools such as mine. It is more important now than ever before for our students to understand how to solve problems to become competitive in the future work force. Science is where many of those skills are learned. My students will be using models to explore and explain natural phenomenon. The Van de Graaff generator will allow us to explore charges and develop a model about how electricity works. Natural phenomenon like electricity is an abstract concept. Being able to use these materials will allow them to put a picture with such a difficult concept.
