We need a class set of good quality Ukuleles for our students to learn on. As discussed in the article by Nathan Cahill, "Ukuleles provide a very unique experience for students in that they can combine melodic, harmonic, and chordal playing, and singing – all at the same time." Using Ukuleles in my classroom will provide students the unique experience of playing various chords and strum patterns that they have not been able to experience before. Using Ukuleles in the classroom can also encourage my 3rd-5th grade students to continue singing, which can be difficult as they get older and more self-conscious. Beyond that, my students will also be learning hand-eye coordination, fine and gross motor skills, and how those skills connect with the sound created on the instruments.
My students are fascinated with new instruments and are driven to learn about them.
These instruments have more than just academic and musical value. They are personally interesting and exciting for my students. I constantly have students asking me to bring in my personal Ukulele and play for them or even allow them to strum on the strings. Ukuleles can also be adapted for my rising EC students who are aching for more time on instruments. This set of Ukuleles will improve and extend my students understanding of musical performance and composition and will truly give them experiences they will never forget. Any help you can give to fund our goal would make a great impact on my students and music classes.
