A carpeted gathering space has so many benefits! Easily organize students into assigned spaces. Gather for deep meaningful conversations in a large circle for restorative justice practices. Grab a book and read in comfort. Get the iPad and sit with a friend to share your learning! The rug area is the center of my classroom. The desks are lined around the rug. The students who prefer sitting on the rug can sit on the rug with a clipboard during lessons. This really helps with classroom management by meeting the needs of different learning styles and allowing me access to all students during a whole group lesson. As students work in independent learning areas the rug is a great place to work in groups and have a large space to spread out manipulatives. The large rug area also helps reduce noise. The most important thing is that a rug creates warmth both physical and emotional. Our school is an old building with tile floors that can get very cold in a Buffalo, NY winter and the rug is warm to sit on! The rug provides cozy warmth to foster a positive and nurturing environment.
