The children's book Wonder by R.J. Palacio is a fantastic book that not only teaches reading skills such as main idea, supporting details, and figurative language but also kindness and empathy. The book Wonder can help students discuss thoughts and feelings from various points of view. This will lead to rich classroom discussions and seeing other characters' points of view. Through novel studies such as this one, students can learn not only state standards but also key social-emotional skills. This book's theme of kindness and standing up for what is right, requires students to have collaborative conversations regarding kindness and bullying. The book Wonder will not only be one of many novels that we read within the school year, but will, hopefully, leave a lasting impression on the children that will carry on to their adult lives.
