Throughout this school year students have been learning about racial stereotypes, assimilation, and the desire to fit it through reading diverse texts. "American Born Chinese" by Gene Luen Yang will continue that conversation in the classroom as well as open up students' minds to the adversities people of different cultures face while in America. Students learn best through interaction with texts they can relate to and/or find interesting. And this is what makes this read by Yang so special. Not only will it deepen students understanding of racial stereotypes, assimilation, and the desire to fit in, but it will keep them highly engaged and in what they are learning in English.
