My students are special because they are resilient. My 10-year-old students have endured many situations that many adults never experience. Lock downs and shootings nearby our school are nothing new to them. Crime is an everyday occurrence in their neighborhood and unfortunately they have been victims to it while at school. I teach in the same neighborhood that I grew up in and I am an example of overcoming the same obstacles and succeeding. I tell them about the importance of giving back to the community to make it a better place and that I believe that every single one of them has the potential for greatness.
