Students at my school are beginning to love reading, but need more examples in books and written texts of people they can connect to culturally. The population of my school is predominately made up of minority students. The materials we have to read in the library and in the literacy closets rarely show the students notable people of color. We want to find books where kids can see themselves, and also people around the world of other cultures. This will help my students to value themselves as people whose stories are worthy of being told. Reading books that show culturally diverse characters is important to all readers.
