I will be the new art specialist at Ernest May Elementary and will essentially be building my program and classroom from scratch. I would like to have a classroom library of books that relate to art, art terminology and famous artists. For example, the book Monsters Love Color can be a great resource for my much younger students, while Tell Us a Story, Papa Chagall will have more relevance with my 4th and 5th graders as I introduce them to famous artists and art history. I've always firmly believed that books and reading are the most important part of education, and can be utilized in any subject area, including the visual arts. Starting an art lesson with a book or story is a great way to get little minds focused on the concept or artist we will be studying before we put pencil, pen or paintbrush to paper. I've chosen a variety of meaningful books that can be incorporated into most of my lesson plans, from early childhood to fifth grade. I've spent the past ten years teaching at the middle school level and am looking forward to my next journey back with the young artists that I started my teaching career with.
