Our new project "Music Around the World" combines social studies, literacy, music appreciation, and orchestra as we learn about music culture of faraway places - China, West Africa, Latin America and India. We study the world map to discover how far away the place that we currently learn about is, we study musical instruments traditional for this particular culture, we listen to the various performances and then write about how the music makes us feel. My students are learning how to be receptive and acceptable to the unfamiliar sounds and through that they learn to be global citizens in our ever-changing wide world. These drums will help my students experience the different cultures that they are learning about in the comfort of their own classrooms!
