Headphones with microphones would allow students with a variety of learning disabilities access to different computer programs that would enhance learning opportunities. Our district provides access to Chromebooks and each student receives a standard set of earbuds but that is not enough. My students need access to good headphones that block out external noise and have microphones that enable them to use speech to text technology. I purchased earbuds with microphones this year because they are less expensive than headphones but they are not very durable, do not block out extra noise, and do not pick up speech sounds accurately. Many of them are already broken. All students, regardless of ability, deserve equal access to technology! Some students are able to articulate their thoughts verbally but struggle to get these same thoughts to paper, even choosing to use lower level vocabulary because it is easier to spell. Headphones with microphones would enable struggling writers to use speech to text technology to express themselves, listen to their writing, then use editing software to make corrections. Headphones with microphones would also reinforce reading fluency by allowing students to read into programs, listen to themselves read, and submit these recording to teachers for review. Technology is opening new doors for students with learning differences. Please consider helping provide improved access to these amazing new opportunities.
