Students will closely examine the craft of telling story through language and visual art, yet also make these skills their own in the second phase of this unit when they create their own story. They will use books like Primates, Maus, The Breadwinner and Laika to explore history and science in an engaging way. Students will understand historical and scientific concepts from the stories, but also understand how as humans we overcome challenges and make new discoveries. As authors, students will take part in the process of fictionalizing very real and important stories. These powerful books will serve as inspiration for student writers.
