iPads. YouTube. Videogames. This is how many people think children stay engaged these days. But I have never seen my students so enthusiastic, focused and creative as when I brought in (borrowed) STEM activities for them. The key to fostering a love of reading in children is to connect books to real world activities. When we read "The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind", the story comes alive when students create their own windmills. After we read "One Plastic Bag", they wanted to know how to weave a wallet. And reading the Rosie Revere series makes everyone want to build build build!! I have selected STEM tools that will allow students to explore their creativity, critical thinking and problem solving skills. But most importantly, they will have fun! They love the trial and error, taking chances and have such pride in their efforts. Instead of saying "I can't" they ask "How can I...?" Growing as thinkers and working cooperatively with enthusiasm and joy is the best outcome of learning!
