My students are only 5 or 6 years old. Education is not always their prime concern each morning. Many live in challenging situations; foster homes, single parents, grandparents, absent parents, hunger, loneliness, loss. They struggle with many things. Learning math and reading is not always in the mainstream of their thought processes. Making learning more inviting with manipulatives and learning activities helps to overcome some of the negative influences that permeate their lives. Although these students have difficult situations, they are still young and very teachable. The glimpses of positivity and hope they see at school helps to fuel them in a progressive direction.
