One of our main endeavors in the classroom is career planning with the focus on employability skills and money management. There are many free online resource that provide students with virtual tools for money management and financial planning. However, the main problem is the lack of accessible technology. A classroom set of ChromeBooks for students will remove access barriers to the online resources and tools that can provide progressive development to their money management and career planning skills. I have also included a lock cart to ensure that these ChromeBooks will be regularly available to students on a day to day basis.
Budgeting money is very difficult in an economy that provides easy access to credit which can lead to increased debt through unplanned purchases. Many people lack the knowledge for money management, budget planning, and savings, while giving into buyer temptation. This is why I choose to begin educating students in middle school about financial planning to provide the foundation needed for future needs. My class does not just teach life skills, it teaches essential skills. Former students have contested that career and money management is their favorite unit because of its real life application and they can see the use of these skills in the next chapter of their lives.
I am unable to explore this unit fully because of the lack accessible technology for students to get online. Classroom ChromeBooks would provide students consistent access and use of online tools to establish virtual budgets, manage financial plans, and to see the impacts of debits and savings to fully understand money management as they progress through their careers.
I have included computer headphones and mouses to meet the needs the needs of all students.
