Even as adults, we hear "just take a breath" or "count to ten." That can be frustrating for adults and even more for children. With these pulse monitors, and with guided practice of deep breathing exercises, students will be able to watch as their heart rate lowers to a normal level. This type of visual stimulation can show students that they are in control of their own bodies, even when it may not feel that way. As a school counselor, I make it my personal responsibility to see students leave the doors of the elementary school prepared for middle school and eventually the adult world. If students are not equipped with coping strategies to push through adversity, they are not prepared for real-world challenges no matter their academic capabilities.
