My students have traditionally read novels with characters that do not represent them, their lives, or their backgrounds. My goal for this project is to have a variety of texts that students can feel represented by along with the materials necessary to engage them in learning. I want my students to feel like their experiences are valid- and also to understand the power literature holds in shaping narratives around identities. Through the graphic novels of Persepolis and Black Panther, my students will explore the pressing themes of identity, power, and oppression both in America and abroad. The texts will engage them in critical thinking surrounding race and privilege, and serve as a vehicle to teach the importance of representation in literature.
