Special Needs students learn differently, but hands-on experience always produces the best results. With the addition of these items to our upgraded and adapted transition room, our students will learn hands-on about kitchen safety and meeting their basic needs concerning food and nutrition. Students will use the microwave to learn to prepare simple meals, and the carts to learn organization and storage skills and habits. Carts will also be used to prepare and serve food, store utensils, dishes, linens and other items the students will be learning with, as well assisting students with carrying items from lab to lab. All students, regardless of disability, need access to a high quality education, exposure to the world of work, and independent home life including the chance to participate in work experiences, and opportunities to develop daily living skills. Lessons in buying food, kitchen safety, and preparation of simple balanced meals are imperative for special students to transition from school to work and home. Organizational skills, cleaning habits, along with following directions are all important skills for the special needs population, alongside academic instruction.
