Students learn best when they are able to focus on their work with minimal distractions. Computers can help facilitate stronger learning, but can also pose a distraction during lessons or in small groups because many programs use sound effects or other verbal points of interaction. These sound effects can be distracting to other students, and can make it difficult for students to focus on individual verbal cues. Headphones can solve this issue by providing a quiet environment that is conducive to learning while still allowing students to interact with a program’s sound effects. Having headphones for all of my students would allow them to take advantage of the benefits of computer programs that use music, sound effects, translation services, and so much more. For instance, I would like to be able to use Scratch more frequently with my students. Scratch is a simplified coding program in which students learn an interface and use pre-made code strips to create animations, stories, games, and more. The program utilizes sound effects and music that can be incorporated. Headphones would allow multiple students to work on projects at the same time without any distractions. Introducing new computer programs to my class will help to reinvigorate learning and make the classroom environment more fun. Programs like Scratch are just the start of STEM activities in my school. Moving on from Scratch, students could explore programs in engineering and robotics, for example. This exploration begins with the ability to focus and remain undistracted, an ability that hinges on the availability of headphones to provide a quiet, focused learning environment.
