I am attempting to create situations in my classroom that will inspire reading and writing. I teach a wonderful group of second graders, ages 7 and 8, in a high poverty inner city school. The students in my classroom are likely to be at risk for failure. Learning to read and write can be especially difficult for children who have limited proficiency with English, are from homes in which a nonstandard dialect of English is spoken, and have parents that had difficulty learning to read.
