My students are extremely grateful any time I bring another resource into the classroom. As a new teacher, my library is still small, and would benefit from some appropriate leveled books. I search through thrift stores, and tag sales, but it's tough to find some of the more popular texts. At this age, many students lack interest in reading, and having only a small number of books doesn't make it easy to find something to spark that interest. Having a variety of genres, authors, and leveled texts would make it easier to find a book match for every student. I would also use these books as mentor texts during lessons in reading and writing, to demonstrate how the skills we are learning are used in books, and how they can apply these skills to their own work. The headphones being used right now are falling apart, and are extremely dated. Headphones are often used by students on the desktops in the back of the classroom during math and literacy stations, to listen to audio books, and practice listening skills. Headphones also assist students who have trouble with attention to stay focused, so that classroom distractions don't keep them from accomplishing tasks. Whiteboards are wonderful resources that are utilized throughout the school day. I prefer to use whiteboards so that we cut down on how much paper is used throughout the day. Not only is this environmentally friendly, but paper can be hard to come by as the year progresses. I utilize whiteboards to practice math skills during intervention time, small groups, and to do informal assessments throughout the lessons I teach.
