This year we have read Third Grade Angels by Jerry Spinelli. My students were so engaged with the novel that when we finished the book the first thing they asked was "Can we read Fourth Grade Rats next?"
Fourth Grade Rats is a sequel to Jerry Spinelli's Third Grade Angels. Having this class set will enable us to read and find out what happens to Subs as he moves into the fourth grade. My students are able to make connections to the main character and situations that the characters face since they will be transitioning to fourth grade soon.
Through novel studies, my students are engaged in dialogue about the same text. At the beginning of the year, I taught students accountable talk. The accountable talk provides my students with a structure to have conversationing about a topic. Providing these opportunities for my students through novel studies not only encourages reading and improves comprehension but helps develop their social skills. Through accountable talk, students also learn how to respond to others respectfully even when they disagree with someone. These are skills that are needed because it may not always be taught or modeled at home.
