Our K–5 SEL classroom is a little bit of everything it’s not self contained-sensory breaks, big emotions, tiny shoes, deep conversations, spontaneous dance parties, tears, laughter, problem-solving, and endless reminders to “keep your hands to yourself.” Every day is beautifully unpredictable. We also service IEP academic goals. It’s a juggling act to say the least since a regulated student is a learning student. We support students with a wide range of needs, including emotional disturbances, autism, sensory processing challenges, trauma backgrounds, anxiety, ADHD, and behavioral needs. One moment we may be helping a kindergartener learn how to ask for a break instead of screaming, while the next we are coaching a fifth grader through conflict resolution or coping strategies. It can look chaotic from the outside, but inside that chaos is growth, connection, regulation, and trust being built every single day.
