My Period 4 Employability and Transition class is eager to start a school based enterprise. We chose a school-wide recycling program. Currently, dozens of water, juice, and soda bottles are thrown into the trash every day at our school. Each classroom in the building needs a recycle bin to safely and efficiently collect these bottles so our team of students can recycle them and prevent more plastic from entering our landfills. Most of the bottles will be redeemed for 5 cents each. Money raised will be donated back to the school and local communities. The students will choose a different charity each month. A recycling project will inspire civic responsibility, reinforce math and science skills, and bring the class together as a team. The students themselves will promote the program, distribute the bins, collect the bottles, return the bottles, and manage the money collected. This recycling project will benefit the students, the school, and, the environment! And as the program continues, these students will be proud for years to come.
