Having hungry students will never be productive in the classroom. I allow any student in the school to use PBIS points to purchase food and drinks from my class, not just my current students. As a result, I find myself running low more frequently and now providing snacks for kids to take home so they can eat in the evenings. While this was a noble effort on my part, I have learned that as a newer NC teacher I am quite strapped for cash and struggle to keep my store supplied. While this would help supplement my weekly purchases for food, it wouldn't fully solve the problem of working in a Title I school. I fully intend to continue purchasing for my students but need help keeping the store full throughout the year. By feeding my students you feed their bellies and minds. I need help keeping my students full and motivated. Providing snacks keeps the positive reinforcement up and running as well as keeping my students up and running. I have seen first hand the sharp decline in discipline issues in my classroom by creating a safe environment where my kids' needs are met. I now have a zero percent failure rate (most of the time) and have immense student buy-in and support. I have no shame in begging for my students to make sure their lives can be even marginally better while in my classroom. Please consider helping me feed my loveable big kids who are just a little "hangry" most days.
