Listening to books above their reading level and responding will help my students to practice and enhance their reading comprehension skills. These iPods will allow my students to choose books to listen and respond to. In previous years my listening center has consisted of one radio and one story chosen by me for 4-6 students to listen to at one time. The iPods would give my students the opportunity to choose their own book, and listen individually or with a partner. Freedom of choice and smaller group setting are keys to enhancing engagement! Any time I can reduce the size of a group working on an activity the level of engagement and learning is increased. The iPods would also allow me to use books on CD that I already have in my classroom to be downloaded, which will create a digital library for the students to choose from. I can also further differentiate the learning by designating each reading group a specific library to choose from, with targeted comprehension sheets for each level. With these tools in my classroom, students can use an iPod to listen to a book of their choosing in a comfortable and quiet place. I am very excited to see my students learn to use technology to engage in literacy rich activities!
