I am so excited about this Global Engineering Project. My students are reading "Refugee" and "A Long Walk to Water". We decided as a class to try and propose solutions to the challenges that the characters faced in the book. Many of my students are from other countries and they understand the plight of the characters. First they identified the challenges such as; Josef is a Jewish boy in 1930s Nazi Germany. With the threat of concentration camps looming, he and his family board a ship bound for the other side of the world… so students decided to engineer and design a ship that is geared towards more passenger capacity. With each new challenge, students brainstormed ideas to help with those challenges. Other ideas were to build a raft out of recyclable materials that actually floats and design backpacks that are lightweight but can carry essentials. I want to be able to provide materials to help them with their design and creations. These materials will give them freedom to dream and create. I feel that it is very important to give students the opportunities to brainstorm and engineer. Thank you for your help with this important project and giving my students an opportunity to give back.
