I chose Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison because the vast majority of the books and authors that we read about in the American Literature curriculum are limited to white male audiences. While this literature is very worthwhile and fruitful for the students, I would like to broaden our reading to include experiences of other categories into which my students fall. Song of Solomon is one of the most celebrated works by this Nobel Prize winner and I would like to give the students the opportunity to experience her unique work in its most successful form and I believe seeing her work will help form them into better readers and writers while preserving and validating their own unique backgrounds.
